The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Geneva Africa Headquarters has embarked on a mission to establish an Africa Anti-Terrorism Court, with Amb. Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure, Head of Delegation for Africa, leading the charge.
In a significant development, the IHRC Africa HQ has approached the President of South Sudan, H.E Silva Kir, to support the convening of a meeting to draft the Treaty for the establishment of the Court. The proposed Court aims to adjudicate terrorism cases, promoting awareness, respect, and compliance with anti-terrorism laws in Africa.
The Court will operate based on United Nations anti-terrorism conventions, African human rights conventions, and generally accepted anti-terrorism customs and practices. A Design Team, comprising judges, lawyers, academics, and nonprofits, will be assembled to draft the Treaty.
The IHRC believes that the Africa Anti-Terrorism Court will create a consistent and comprehensive body of substantive anti-terrorism law, enhancing regional security and cooperation. With South Sudan’s support, the IHRC aims to engage other African countries in this noble endeavor.
